Ferry Services to and from Iceland

Most visitors that travel to Iceland will be flying into the country’s international airport Keflavik, whereas Reykjavik Airport is mostly used for domestic flight connections. However, another option is to take the only ferry that goes from Hirtshals in northern Denmark to Seyðisfjörður in east Iceland, via the magnificent Faroe Islands.

Smyril Line is the only company that provides a ferry route from Denmark to Iceland, via the Faroe Islands. The sailing time is around 36 hours from Denmark to the Faroe Islands and after that, it will be another 19 hours from the Faroes to Iceland.

The ferry's home-port is at the capital of the Faroe Islands, named Tórshavn. This is a small archipelago with a population of only 50,000 inhabitants. All the ferry journeys will make a stop in Tórshavn, and the pause range from about six hours to three days, depending on the season's schedule.

Ferries sail once a week between April and October. Here all travelers will have the opportunity to take their own vehicle to Iceland or alternatively to travel on foot.

All the ferries dock at Seydisfjordur port in the east of Iceland. From here, you can connect by car via route 1 to the rest of the island. Alternatively, you can use the ring road, which runs around the Island connecting all the major cities.

Visitors will also find several buses that run year-round between Seyðisfjörður and Egilsstaðir, and from Egilsstaðir northwest to Akureyri and on to Reykjavík.
